University video

This was an 80 page project management report that I developed as part of my masters studies at Towson University. This case study involved the analysis, design, development, and delivery of a eCommerce web site for a video rental store. Below are links to some of the key deliverables contained in the report. - Summer 2001

Project Background

University Video is a medium sized video store (carrying about 60% of the inventory of an average Blockbuster) located in Salisbury MD (population 38,000). The family owned business has always benefited from its close proximity (about ¼ mile) to Eastern University and its 10,000 on campus residents. University students tend to rent more movies per month in comparison to non-students, and therefore make up a key customer segment on which University Video wants to focus.

The store also benefits from its location on US Route 13, which runs north/south through the small city. The quickly developing city was once dominated by small family owned video stores. However, in the early 90's a Blockbuster opened in the southern part of the city (about ½ mile from the university) and quickly began to rid the area of its competition. Another Blockbuster opened up a few years later in the northern section of town. University Video lost around 50% of their business due to these new stores. The remaining customers consisted of people who lived in communities within walking distance of the store, and university students that didn't want to make the longer walk to Blockbuster.

Six months ago a Hollywood Video moved in adjacent to campus to compete with Blockbuster. Hollywood Video now provided students with the shortest walk to rent a video. Since then University Video, the only independent video store still operating in Salisbury, has lost even more of its customer base and has begun to lose money. The store must find a way to increase its sales or else it will not be able to cover operating costs, and will be forced to close its doors. The store currently has a web site, which was launched in 1998, that functions basically as brochure ware. The site contains a few pages that contain basic information such as the store location, history, operating hours, and a contact us page with their phone number and email address.

A university student majoring in Information Systems and Internet Design volunteered as part of an Internship to help University Video prepare an RFP and select a vendor for the project. University Video is willing to spend up to $55,000 dollars for a web site that will enable the business to significantly increase its market share. University Music has been losing money, but the owners are willing to risk some of their personal savings for a chance to save the business they love.

Project Objective

University Video needs to have a new web site designed and developed that will enable it to increase its customer base (university students in particular) and in turn generate additional revenue. This will be accomplished through a web site that will securely accept credit card orders for movies that will be delivered to a central location. The web site needs to be visually attractive, professional looking, and user friendly. The web site needs to be completely developed, tested, and turned over to University Video's web hosting provider by Aug 10th, in order to have the site ready for the beginning of Eastern University's Fall semester.
